Before you decide on a wood shake roof, we will need to determine if your city allows this type of roofing system. Some cities don't allow wood shake roofs, due to the fire hazard. The actual wood shake material does not have a Class A fire rating under the UL rating system. But by adding the appropriate underlayment, we can make it into a Class A roofing system. This usually entails adding a cap sheet underlayment over the felt paper shake liner.
For customers who want the appearance of wood shake, but the added protection of a Class A roofing system, we can also install a tile roof that looks like wood shake. The most popular products are US Tile Proshake and Monier CedarLite. The underlayment for these two materials is similar to that for tile roofs.
